Supermarket chain Sainsbury’s is to invest in a multimillion-point checkout technology system that could cut queuing times by 500,000 hours per year. Technology partner NCR will install self-service checkouts in 330 stores in the UK, adding to the existing 240 stores that already have self-service facilities.
As well as this, Sainsbury’s is investing in new barcode scanning technology for manner and unmanned tills in all of its UK stores. This will provide each checkout with several lasers rather than one, making a much stronger laser, and improve the capability to scan scratched or damaged barcodes.
The new system has a green aspect to it as well. The new technology will provide double-sided receipts on self-service checkouts, cutting the amount of paper used by 350 tonnes per year.
Roger Burnley, Sainsbury’s retail and logistics director, said: "We know that lots of our customers really value the speed and convenience of self-service checkouts, particularly when they are just popping into our stores for a quick shop.
“However, we are as always committed to offering all our shoppers a choice between the two systems.”
