Oracle comes out on top in data mining

Analyst Forrester Research has named Oracle as a leader in data mining and predictive analytics in its February report.

The report entitled "The Forrester Wave™: Predictive Analytics And Data Mining Solutions, Q1 2010," says: "Oracle provides a PA/DM solution portfolio that is built into its own widely adopted DBMS, DW, data integration, and BI platforms, with a wide range of prepackaged predictive applications, and it provides a powerful assortment of algorithms for mining complex structured and unstructured information types."

Ray Roccaforte, vice president of Data Warehousing and Analytics at Oracle, said: "By moving predictive analytics to their Oracle Database, customers save time and money by eliminating data movement and duplication into multiple repositories and servers.

“Now with the Sun Oracle Database Machine, customers can offload data mining scoring to intelligent Oracle Exadata Storage Servers for even faster predictive analysis.

In practice, Oracle’s data mining techniques have helped companies in all manner of industries reach the top of their game.

The BMW Oracle Racing team recently sung the praises of Oracle’s data mining as it prepares to compete in the America’s Cup race off the coast of Spain.

Ian Burns, Performance Director of BMW Oracle Racing, said: “Using Oracle data mining the performance team managed to provide the information required to optimise the giant multihull to the point that it not only beat the reigning America's Cup champions Alinghi in their giant Catamaran but resoundingly crushed them in a power display of high speed sailing. After two races - and two massive winning margins - the America's Cup was heading back to America."
