Citrix acquires Cloud.com

Over the next four years spending on public cloud services will grow four times faster than the entire IT market. No wonder Citrix is happy with their recent acquisition.

Cloud.com, the open source cloud-computing platform has been welcomed into the Citrix family. By providing infrastructure-as-a-service (IaaS), Cloud.com helps customers build and manage private and public clouds.

"As the industry moves into the cloud era, Citrix is committed to leading the charge with powerful solutions that make the cloud more open, more secure, and more personal,” said Mark Templeton, president and CEO of Citrix Systems.

Citrix already has quite a portfolio when it comes to the cloud – OpenStack, Cloud Gateway, Cloud Bridge and XenDesktop and XenApps. Adding Cloud.com allows the company to complete its family of virtualisation, orchestration and networking services.

According to Citrix, the world’s largest and most successful public clouds are run on platforms that are purpose-built for cloud computing, pointedly not following the traditional enterprise datacentre route. They also offer multi-tier and multi-tenant services.

Whilst Cloud.com already supports Citrix XenServer and VMware vSphere, Citrix will be extending this support to Microsoft’s Hyper-V and System Centre.

According to IDC, as spending on the cloud grows faster than the rest of the IT market it could hit $72.9bn by 2015. An incredible compound annual growth of 28%.

Citrix are definitely holding all the right cards.
