Newsstand rivals - Google vs. Apple

Google is moving to the newsstand, according to the Wall Street Journal. Publishers would be able to distribute publications online as Android-based applications (smartphone and tablet platforms), and, apparently, Google have already spoken with publishers about the proposal.

Apple offers publishers 70% of the revenue on the digital publication purchases made through iOS devices – Google, however, would be able to give the publishers a higher percentage. Apple are looking into its subscription and marketing services – possibly to refine them – whether this is directly linked to the Google competition is unclear.

Apple is forecast to move 20 million tablets by the end of 2011. iTunes and the App Store have long delivered content to iOS devices, such as the iPad. But even with this history – the competition must be addressed.

The tablet market is expected to grow with increasing speed as a direct result of digital publications and purchasing services expanding. Adobe is just one software vendor who is jumping on the bandwagon and offering publishers new tools and platforms to create digital publications.

How long will it be before everyone on the rush hour train will be reading the morning paper on a tablet? And how many will be iPads?
