.co.uk is the Place to Be

The .uk domain is fast becoming a pretty big fish, according to registry Nominet, with more .uk websites being registered than China (.cn) and second only to .de (Germany). In Nominet’s Domain Name Industry Report 2010, 80% of UK consumers prefer .uk sites to the popular .com.

.uk registration has been “particularly good this year,” said Phil Kingsland, director of marketing and communications at Nominet., “ with some of the highest levels of new registrations that we've seen since the dotcom boom, despite the current focus on austerity.”

The internet has become a tool of choice for people looking to create new ventures in a recession, and it is unusual to not have a domain name on advertising material these days. Kingsland thinks businesses should seize the moment to attract more Internet traffic to websites.

"Businesses will want to tune into what consumers expect when they are interacting with them online, and how important an appropriate domain name can be."

Domain name marketplace Sedo backs up Nominet’s report, as Nora Nanayakkara, business development director, states, “The .co.uk ccTLD continues to be one of the most popular extensions purchased through Sedo.”

Sedo goes further and explains how a domain name, reflecting stability and strength, is of huge importance, and as a result will be part of the company’s business strategy – and included in the budget.

Even on the internet – it’s all about location, location, location.
