SAP unveiled plans last week to be the 'number one leader in mobile industry.' Bill McDermott, SAP co-chief executive said, "We have aggressive goals; within nine months SAP will be the only company able to deliver the full applications and business intelligence to customers on any platform, anywhere."
The power behind such talk appears to be SAP's recent acquisition of the enterprise mobility firm Sybase. As well as keeping up with Oracle in terms of buying up companies, through Sybase, SAP now has a database it has full control over and with reengineering it will eventually work with SAP rather than merely support it.
Clive Longbottom, the service director of business process anaylis at Quocirca, believes SAP can achieve the nine months turn around goal.
'iAnywhere is an open platform by the nature of how Sybase built it, and had already been used by many SAP systems for providing mobile access.' He said. Though, if it slips at all, it will then be a bad reflection on how complex SAP itself is.'
SAP is not expecting any 'slip' to happen. Instead, SAP is confident they will reap the rewards of the 6.5 billion mobile connections (as predicted by Gartner) by 2014.
Sybase will continue as an independent company, a point McDermott was keen to make. 'This is about growth and value for our customers.' No aggression in terms of the acquisition then - instead a happy and cooperative partnership - which can only be a good thing with such a grand plan ahead.
