Oracle boosts productivity at Hong Kong broadband provider

Demonstrating Oracle’s growth in the East this week was the news that the software giant has helped to give a significant boost to Hong Kong Broadband Network Limited (HKBN). HKBN is the fastest growing broadband provider in the country, and the second largest; since February 2010, it added 73,000 new subscribers to its already sizeable base of 464,000, so we are looking at a major player here.

HKBN is now using Oracle Communications Data Model to enhance its data warehouse. The implementation of the software took three months, and helps to support rapid time-to-market over custom-built solutions and scales for sustainable growth. This adds to HKBN’s existing Oracle software, Oracle Database and Oracle Business Intelligence Suite Enterprise Edition.

The new addition now enables HKBN to track key metrics such as customer behaviours, marketing campaign results and competitor prices to up its game. This represents a big improvement for HKBN; before the implementation, the company’s reporting environment was siloes, with each service having a separate data structure and no visibility across multiple services. Now, HKBN staff can see data across departments via one account, making it easier for them to perform queries without IT support and really boosting productivity.

Oracle vice president of product marketing Dan Ford said: “As services and devices become more complex and new business models emerge, communications service providers must manage exponentially growing data volumes.

“Oracle Communications Data Model helps CSPs like Hong Kong Broadband Network to quickly and cost effectively build and extend data warehouses to meet business needs.

“Building on Oracle’s industry-leading database software, business intelligence technology, Sun hardware and communications-industry expertise, Oracle Communications Data Model helps CSPs deliver actionable business intelligence without the pitfalls of costly, custom-built warehouses.”

Jesse Chan, director of IT and business support systems at HKBN, said: “We needed a versatile, integrated data warehouse architecture to improve our decision-making processes and enable our ongoing success.

“Oracle Communications Data Model enables our users to spend time analyzing data rather than collecting it. The results are clear in accelerated market-share gains and reduced churn.”
