Naysayers have raised concerns over the future of many things since the acquisition of Sun Microsystems by Oracle, and perhaps the most common worry was the future of MySQL.
Oracle has already made 10 commitments to not only protect but improve the database as well as encourage open source community involvement, including ruling out restrictive licences.
Views have been mixed over the future of MySQL. Rocky Appiah, vice president of technology at Epic Advertising, claimed that MySQL development “was a little stagnant” under Sun, and so Oracle could give it the boost it needed. Other more nervous users, however, have called for a more detailed roadmap for the future of the database.
Well, to further reassure users that MySQL will not only be safe with Oracle, but better off, Oracle’s Chief Corporate Architect Edward Screven will do just that. At the O’Reilly MySQL conference in Santa Clara, California, Screven will provide a road map for the database’s future.
Screven said last week in a statement that MySQL is “strategic to Oracle” and added: “We're looking forward to outlining our plans for MySQL and providing the development community with deeper insight into the enhancements they can expect right now and moving forward."
Further to that, Oracle has also announced two MySQL user forums on 6th May in Amsterdam and 3rd June in Redwood Shores, California.
